No Hate Speech Movement official Campaign video

"Hate speech, as defined by the Council of Europe, covers all forms of expression which spread, incite, promote or justify racial hatred, xenophobia, anti-Semitism or other forms of hatred based on intolerance, including: intolerance expressed by aggressive nationalism and ethnocentrism, discrimination and hostility against minorities, migrants and people of immigrant origin."

(Don't read the comments to this on YouTube: they are of course mostly ignorant hate from the very bullies the movement seeks to reeducate).

Guest post: Gametes don’t prescribe your gender either

I see a variation of the usual cis-centric perspective of “We just need to get down to brass tacks and accept the reality of male and female!” being trotted out in the comments. This time, it’s all about which gametes a person’s body produces.

If only it were that simple...

I’m Sarah Nyberg, and I Was a Teenage Edgelord. — Medium

A story of Internet bullying. It could also be entitled: "Being a dick is a choice".
If you’ve interacted with or publicly shown your support for me on twitter within the past few weeks, you’ve likely been accosted by an army of frothing reactionaries insisting that I’m a terrible person; often this is accompanied by “proof” in the form of screenshots, conspiratorial Youtube rants, or links to Breitbart.

I always knew this day would come. The day that Facebook decided my name was not real enough and summarily cut me off from my friends, family and peers and left me with the stark choice between using my legal name or using a name people would know me by. With spectacular timing, it happened while I was at trans pride and on the day the Supreme Court made same sex marriage legal in the US.

This is a story that’s been told many times before. It is a story I’ve seen repeated time and time again as my friends have disappeared off the site, often never to return. This time there’s a twist: I used to work there...

Reblog: Transgender: Fact or Fiction?

by Alison Hudson

Transgender has become a hot topic in the media of late. From the success of shows like Transparent, to gossip column rumors about Bruce (for now) Jenner, to political debates over bathroom bills and civil rights legislation, transgender people -– those whose gender identity does not align with their birth-assigned gender -- are getting a lot of attention. Because transgender is a hot topic, everyone seems to have an opinion on it and, especially in places like op-Ed pages and blog comments sections, many self-appointed experts have been sharing what they view as the “facts” of being transgender with others. Not surprisingly, many of those facts are plain wrong...

Sexual Orientation is Developed in the Womb | evoL =

Despite societal discrimination and religious persecution, homosexuality and bi-sexuality, like heterosexuality, are inborn traits that cannot be changed and are not a choice. Attempted suppression does not work. It always pushes through. Human sexuality is very complex. It is not simply one moment or one single dividing cell, that affects one’s sexuality but a series of changes and combinations of androgens released prenatally at specific times (or not) which establish a person’s sexual orientation...

This 2012 post has some interesting information on the biological determination of sexuality, the definition of gender and intersex conditions. Links are provided for further reading. Above all, it nails very thoroughly the oft-repeated myth that we are all either male or female, and our sex/gender is determined purely by our genitalia.

Defriended Over a Wedding, a Straight Man Gains Perspective | evoL =

My younger brother is gay. Gay as laughter. Gay as the day is long. One of the finest moments in my life, and one of the greatest compliments anyone has ever paid me, was the day he felt safe to come out to me. He’s in his mid-30s now, but he’ll always be my little brother. And man, I love that kid. He’s brilliant, he’s funny, and he’s kind. And he just married a phenomenal man.

I was always predisposed to like his husband because, y’know, he’s my brother’s partner and therefore has automatic status in my heart. The wonderful bonus is that I really like him. He’s brilliant, he’s funny, and he’s kind. He’s a cool dude to hang out with. He also stood by my brother like a rock when my brother had a life-threatening cancer that cost him his left eye.

New Website Highlights Businesses That Don’t Want To Serve Gay People

When the Family Research Council says it wants everyone to be "free to believe," it means "free to discriminate."

The Family Research Council (FRC), an anti-LGBT hate group, has launched a new site called “Free To Believe,” a new effort to emphasize “religious freedom” as a means of denying LGBT equality. The site is a catalog of the stories of 20 individuals, all of whom either run businesses that are committed to refusing service to same-sex couples or have otherwise experienced public backlash for opposing LGBT equality."

Leaflets linking homosexuality to Hitler and the Moors Murderers handed out in Dublin

Homophobic leaflets likening homosexuals to paedophiles and gang rapists have been handed out in Dublin.

The leaflet, shared on Facebook by prominent Dublin drag queen Panti Bliss, makes a number of outrageous and bizarre statements, going so far as to liken homosexuals and bisexuals to Adolf Hitler and the Moors Murderers Ian Brady and Myra Hindley.

It claims: “The Moors Murderers – bisexuals, a man and woman, killed many children, boys and girls. E.g. Leslie Ann Downey, 10, whom they tortured to death while tape-recording her pleas for mercy and taking pornographic photos of her.

“Politicians, liking homosexuality, paid no attention. It is said that homosexual centres sell, or direct people to, sexual torture aids.”

Florida trans ‘bathroom ban’ fails to pass

Republican Frank Artiles proposed the bill
in retaliation to a trans anti-discrimination law.
Plans to ban trans people from using toilets and changing rooms have been abandoned in Florida.

Miami Republican Frank Artiles’ proposed “Single-Sex Public Facilities” bill has failed to progress past the committee stage of the legislation process and has been abandoned.

The bill would have made it a crime for trans people to use single-sex facilities in workplaces, schools or any business that is open to the public.

It stated: “Single-sex public facilities are places of increased vulnerability and present the potential for crimes against individuals using those facilities, including, but not limited to, assault, battery, molestation, rape, voyeurism, and exhibitionism."

Court hears how transgender woman killed herself after being taunted in street

Scrabble champion Mikki Nicholson told
psychiatric nurse she felt 'stigmatised'
A transgender woman who was a national Scrabble champion took her own life after receiving abuse for being different, an inquest has heard.

Mikki Nicholson, 36, told a psychiatric nurse that she “felt stigmatised” for being transgender and was being taunted in the street. She wanted to leave Carlisle where she was living because she hoped she would be less abused elsewhere, but had recently discovered that she would risk homelessness by moving.

An Estimated 780,000 Americans in Same-Sex Marriages | Williams Institute

By Gary J. Gates and Frank Newport

The number of legally married same-sex couples in the United States has tripled in the last year. The new estimate suggests that 390,000 out of nearly 1 million same-sex couples are married. Estimates from the 2013 National Health Interview Survey had the figure at 130,000. Even so, about one in six married same-sex couples live in states that currently don’t recognize their marriage. Results for this Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted from January to April 2015 on the Gallup U.S. Daily survey. The study included a random sample of 80,568 adults ages 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

Rowan Atkinson makes more sense than Woman's Hour | Uncommon Sense

Reading the transcript of the Womans’s Hour programme broadcast on BBC Radio on the 9th of March I couldn’t help but be reminded of Rowan Atkinson’s TV advert for Barclaycard.

Broadcast many years ago, when I had time to watch telly, and paying the licence fee didn’t mean supporting a racist political party, it consisted of Atkinson trying to buy a carpet in an Arab country. His character was under the impression that he spoke the same North African language as the merchant. In fact it turned out that Rowan Atkinson’s character had to admit that he and the merchant were “both fluent, but sadly, in different languages”.

This is what struck me about the Woman’s Hour attempt to set up a fight between a trans person who knows about trans children, and a Radical Feminist; they both spoke fluently but in distinctly different languages. Michelle Bridgeman expertly put the case for trans children to be given access to proper healthcare very well and Finn McKay argued that gender should not be policed in the way it is...

The Irish are having a referendum on same-sex marriage in May and, predictably, the International Church of Bigotry (mostly RC, but they’re not alone) has descended on the poor country to bring all its weight to bear on the locals. The same thing happened in France, where it simply wasn’t statistically possible for every single demonstrator in the infamous ultra-rightwing Manif Pour Tous parades to be French, even though they brought the weans along to act as human shields when trying to force their way through police cordons. There’s a MPT cellule in Ireland, though I suspect it’s tiny, and they tweet some very nasty links. Such as to this lot, TFP Student Action, a Catholic extremist hate group flourishing mostly in the Americas.

Now, some time back I ripped apart the petulance, misinformation and outright lies of “Dr” Peter Saunders and his 10 reasons not to legalise same-sex marriage… Continue reading

Sex isn’t chromosomes: the story of a century of misconceptions about X & Y | New Statesman

The assertion that gender is the same as biological sex, and that biological sex depends solely on your chromosomes, is oversimplified and essentially wrong. This post helps you to understand why.
The influence of the XX/XY model of chromosomal sex has been profound over the last century, but it’s founded on faulty premises and responsible for encouraging reductive, essentialist thinking. While the scientific world has moved on, its popular appeal remains...

Transgender children “not confused” about their gender - MambaOnline - Gay South Africa online

In a ground-breaking study, researchers have found that transgender children are not confused or unsure about their gender identity, as many people believe.

The ongoing research, the first large-scale, national study of socially-supported transgender kids in North America, has challenged stereotypes about these children with its first remarkable findings...

Toronto: global epicenter for oppression of sex and gender minorities - Boing Boing

The hashtag #BellLetsTalk has been circulating on Twitter over the last two days or so, ostensibly raising funds for mental health research, treatment and destigmatisation in Canada. This morning it was brought to my attention that a large chunk of the funds raised ($10m in 2011) goes to something very sinister indeed:

You know those reparative therapy "experts" who influenced the homophobic death penalty legislation in Uganda? For sex and gender minorities, that movement is not led by religious zealots, but by a handful of Toronto psychologists like Kenneth Zucker who still get taken seriously in their field.

In 1973, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) decided that gay people were no longer mentally ill, but that changed nothing for trans and gender-variant people...

Leelah's last blog post

Leelah Alcorn threw herself under a truck. Her parents deleted her Tumblr blog within days and are burying her as a boy. She was 17.

SUICIDE NOTE

If you are reading this, it means that I have committed suicide and obviously failed to delete this post from my queue.

Please don’t be sad, it’s for the better. The life I would’ve lived isn’t worth living in… because I’m transgender. I could go into detail explaining why I feel that way, but this note is probably going to be lengthy enough as it is. To put it simply, I feel like a girl trapped in a boy’s body, and I’ve felt that way ever since I was 4. I never knew there was a word for that feeling, nor was it possible for a boy to become a girl, so I never told anyone and I just continued to do traditionally “boyish” things to try to fit in.

When I was 14, I learned what transgender meant and cried of happiness. After 10 years of confusion I finally understood who I was. I immediately told my mom, and she reacted extremely negatively, telling me that it was a phase, that I would never truly be a girl, that God doesn’t make mistakes, that I am wrong. If you are reading this, parents, please don’t tell this to your kids. Even if you are Christian or are against transgender people don’t ever say that to someone, especially your kid. That won’t do anything but make them hate them self. That’s exactly what it did to me.
